Manly Festival

6 - 29 September 2019

The combined creativity of 24 Northern Beaches writers and artists is the focus of a unique new collection of illustrated stories celebrating the theme ‘Saltwater’ to be launched at Manly Library (Market Place, Manly) on Thursday 12 September (6 – 7:30 pm).

The ‘Saltwater’ anthology is being hailed as a ‘magical’ community collaboration involving short-story writers and poets, artists, local Libraries and the Manly Art Gallery & Museum, all working under the guidance of the award-winning author Zena Shapter.

Individual artworks from the anthology will also be shown across the Northern Beaches Library network as a memorable highlight of this year’s Manly Art Festival (6 - 29 September).

Copies of the anthology will be available for purchase at the Libraries ($20).

The paintings, photographs and mixed media artworks will be for sale and displayed on a 24-hour digital screen at the Manly Art Gallery and Museum (on West Esplanade Reserve).

New World

27 September - 8 October 2018

New World is a collection ofimages taken in and around the Tehachapi Pass wind farm in California during a road trip from Los Angeles to San Fransisco. They were shot on an iPhone at dawn and capture a drought stricken landscape that resonates with a quiet intensity.

The works speak to the battle with climate change and act as an urgent reminder that we have perhaps reached the point of no return and the legacy we are now leaving for generations to come.

With her works as presented in this exhibition, Katrina Lezaic, in part, salutes absence, missing and grief. A way to get over the pain of loss by wearing out the same story through sheer repetition: a video on loop. A kind of exorcism! An intimacy with absence. But as well, it offers a new way of representing presences or spirits. It is not that the figures have been removed but the symbols for the figures are there to say what the figures said – a kind of direct communion between the artist and the viewer, a touchstone of her reverence and devotion. Perhaps too, it is a distilling of moments filled with possibility, moments heard about but never directly experienced, a documenting of those moments, a personal response to the joy that was missed, a way to make it exist.

"Contemporary at its best, with a classic twist. An old world elegance." - Laura Hayter, Poet and Writer
